Document Q/SR 88/86

Alleged sorcery led to a fire on 10 March 1584. A barn, stable, cart, wagon and other goods belonging to Edward Burgess (rector of Wivenhoe), were burnt at Wivenhoe. The defendant, Edward Mansell, is described as a Feering clerk.
According to the charge, the fires were caused by Mansell 'exercising magic and incantation'.
He was also accused of using the same arts on 10 September 1581 causing Burgess to 'languish' for six months.
